How an LSD (Limited Slip Differential) Works:

An LSD (Limited Slip Differential) allows a controlled difference in wheel speeds on the same axle—unlike an open differential, which allows full independence. When one wheel begins to lose traction (e.g., on ice, mud, or sand), the LSD limits the slip and transfers torque to the wheel with better grip.

How it works:

Under normal driving, the LSD functions like a standard differential, allowing wheels to rotate at different speeds (e.g., during turns).
When one wheel loses traction, internal mechanisms—friction plates, cones, or gears—engage to limit spin and redirect torque to the wheel with grip.
This improves traction and prevents the vehicle from getting stuck.

Types of LSDs:

Clutch-type (mechanical): Use plates and springs to manage torque distribution.
Torsen (gear-based): Use worm gears to sense and shift torque mechanically.
Viscous LSDs: Use silicone fluid inside a sealed housing to resist slip based on wheel speed difference.
