In a standard drivetrain, drive shafts transfer torque directly to the wheel hubs. In portal hubs, an additional gear set between the hub and axle:
transfers torque downward,
alters the gear ratio (increasing torque at the wheels),
raises the axle position relative to the terrain.
This provides not only higher ground clearance but also better traction, which is especially valuable in mud, rocky terrain, or sand.

Many portal hub kits are equipped with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) – allowing the driver to adjust tire pressure on the move.

Lower tire pressure for better traction off-road
Increase tire pressure for driving on asphalt, reducing rolling resistance and fuel consumption
